PRACTICAL RESPONSE _ 6 (EXTENDING THE TRACK)

I felt that I wanted to extend the track I was working on and recorded in the last post, as I felt that it needed some more space to breathe to allow listeners to process the struggle and emotion that the track aims to communicate. Previously I wanted to contrast the sparsity of the spoken word with a dense web of acceleration and intensity, but now I feel that bookending the drum n’ bass section with space and subtlety reflects the humanity and internal thought process that surrounds the chaos of the world around us.

The final section is quite simple – all I did was use one of the Neutron recordings that I had already edited and layered a bright but mellow chord progression, using an ethereal, spacious pad to add the ambience.

At this point, I feel as though this track is signalling towards how the album could progress, in terms of the mood swings, tonal shifts and sound selection/arrangement. Opening with contemplation and a slow build up of the sonic landscape that I want to portray is important for me because although this will be a reflection of us as our selves and the world around us (to put it very simply), I intend for the album to feel like it is its own world, an abstraction of what we see around us and within us, like a broken mirror.

With this in mind, I feel that this prototype project has been overall extremely successful, as I now have a tangible blueprint to expand upon when I come to start making the album and video in my future projects.
