PRACTICAL RESPONSE _ 1

In light of the research I have been doing, my ideas have started to gain some momentum. I am interested in transferring the concept of a human haptic feedback loop into a sound piece that can lay a backdrop to a poem/spoken word recording. I have produced some rough experiments using my Behringer Neutron, predominantly using LFO rates and shifting delay time/feedback to create the effect of the sound spinning in a cycle, or constantly feeding into itself – this essentially represents the head of the serpent (ouroboros) eating its tail, consuming itself which mirrors the capitalist world feeding off of the same people/ideas/data/products that keep it alive in the first place – a paradox.

Exp_1 is a lot more sonically dense and chaotic than exp_2, and I would say has more scope to be developed into an arranged composition. The first 3 minutes in particular reflect the type of sound I wanted to go for – layers of differing frequencies folding in on one another. I modulated the LFO rate with a sample and hold, and then modulated the sample and hold rate with the LFO, meaning both modulators were affecting each other at the same time and ‘eating’ away at each other. Using the noise parameter to modulate the wave shape of the sound source and filtering the noise also allowed for more movement and detailed shifting in the timbre of the sound. Also, having two waves going at the same time created even more interaction between sounds, and allowed me to essentially mix the frequencies as I was recording – there are a lot of moments with sub frequencies providing a foundation for the higher frequencies to build detailed sound events which I like a lot.

Exp_2 is a lot more minimal, there are a lot of moments where there are only low hums or high screeches, with occasional sweeps of harmonic bass tones. This recording is very different but I think has better isolated sound moments than the first one. Some specific sounds have a very industrial and metallic quality, for example around 3min 50sec there is a sudden sound that makes me think of a robotic, rusting parasite crying for help. Potentially both of these recordings could be resampled to build a more concrete soundscape.
